44th week

The warm weather at the end of October and beginning of November allowed our common warthogs and red river hogs to enjoy their outside enclosures. Other animals from warmer regions, like our rhinos and elephants, also delighted in a prolonged stay outside.

The previous colder weather and slight snow however offer much happiness to our bison calves and heifers. Kron, our eight year old Nubian ibex, figured out the secret behind opening and closing the door latch and refused to go outside with colder temperatures.

As of the end of October, over 400 000 visitors have visited Tallinn Zoo! We’re open 365 day a year and autumn is one of the more exciting times here, as animals tend to be livelier and more playful than during the hot summer days.

On Thursday our keepers marked the red-necked wallabies. Twelve wallabies were contained in their hut and had their sex identified, ear tags applied and microchips implanted. Six animals still have to be contained to go through the same procedures.

Our young muskox Lia had her medical analyses done in preparation for the move to her new home.

Construction of a new European mink breeding centre has started at our Species Conservation Research lab.

On Monday Friends of Tallinn Zoo hauled soil to our lynx enclosure that’s being renovated. On Saturday workers from DSV transportation company will go and bring moss and heather from the forest to be used as ground material for the lynx habitat.
