Dear participant,

Thank you for attending the Small Carnivore Workshop at Tallinn Zoo! Here are some tips and tricks for the event.

Venue

The Small Carnivore Workshop is hosted by Tallinn Zoo, which is approximately 5 km from the city centre (Freedom Square). The zoo has two entrances: the Main Entrance (address: Ehitajate tee 150) and the North Gate (address: Paldiski mnt 145). The Small Carnivore Workshop will mainly take place at our Nature Education building, which is also the zoo’s main entrance (address: Ehitajate tee 150).

Weather

In the beginning of March, the weather can be difficult to predict. The temperature can be from -10°C to +10°C. It can snow or it can be muddy and rainy. We suggest packing some warm clothes and boots that can help you when it is slippery. Having options and layers is the best. The zoo is situated near the sea, so there can be very icy winds! Wearing a hat and mittens would help to blend in with the rest of Estonians.

Transport to the Zoo

The best way to get to the Main Entrance would be via bus from the Freedom Square (Vabaduse väljak) bus stop. From there, you can take a bus number 42 to Karikakra or Nurmenuku bus stop; or buses 10, 12, 16, 26, 26A, 27, 28, 45, 46, and 61 to Meistri bus stop.

If you really like your morning walks, then getting from the North gate to the Main Entrance takes approximately 20-25 minutes. The best way of getting to the North Gate entrance would be via the Freedom Square (Vabaduse väljak) buses 21, 21b, 22, 41, 41b, and 42 (to the Zoo bus stop) and via Railway Station (Balti jaam) buses 8, 21, and 41 (to the Zoo bus stop).

You can buy the bus ticket (QR code to your email) from the website: https://tallinn.pilet.ee/buy or from the bus by credit card. Please notice, you can scan the QR code and buy the ticket only by the first entrance at the bus.

We would recommend coming straight to the main entrance! Usually the travel time with buses takes around 20-35 minutes, depending on the buses. Number 46 is an express bus, so it should be the quickest, but it does not run the whole day, only in the mornings and afternoons.

Hotels

Tallinn has a big variety of hotels to choose from. Booking.com and Airbnb have a big selection. We would recommend staying in the City Centre where you can have walks around the old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And from there it would be easy to jump on the bus from Freedom Square!

Right on the Freedom Square, there is Palace Hotel https://www.booking.com/Share-imdYtJ
and not far off are Rixwell Collection Savoy https://www.booking.com/Share-xMp6qn  and Hotel St. Barbara https://www.booking.com/Share-VvEm1sy

If you prefer staying closer to the zoo, there are a few options. There might still be a room available for two at a studio apartment right next to the zoo Rocca House by Larsen https://www.booking.com/Share-sMY7UZ. Near the north entrance of the zoo is Hotel Rocca al Mare https://www.booking.com/Share-hawPXUI.

Food & Drink

Coffee breaks and a longer lunch break will be provided during both full days (Wednesday and Thursday) and only a lunch break on Friday. Coffee breaks and lunch will be served in the same building as the conference. Coffee breaks will include a small snack, and lunches will be buffet-style.

Ice breaker (March 4, 18:00)

Welcome drinks and some snacks will be provided during the ice breaker at the zoo’s rainforest restaurant. You can enter the zoo from both gates (look above) and follow the signs to the rainforest.

Gala dinner (March 6, 19:00)

Due to a lower number of participants than we expected, unfortunately we are not going to have a gala dinner at the mediaeval Town Hall. But do not worry! We will have a medieval experience and a proper feast at Olde Hansa (Address: Vana turg 1, Tallinn) and it will be just as awesome! You can read more about it here: https://www.oldehansa.ee/the-tale-of-olde-hansas-heritage/

Identity cards

We want to implement sustainability, and therefore we will not have workshop-themed lanyards. We would kindly ask you to bring your work badge with your name card if you have one. There will be an option of using lanyards from previous conferences and printing your name tag on it.
